Summer Blessings

As Julie and I sat in the Brasilia airport waiting for our connecting flight to South Brazil, where we would spend a few days with our daughter Joy Anna and son-in-law Fabio, I decided to look through the pictures Joshua Huang had taken during his time with us  —  3000 pictures!

The pictures transported me back to the many special moments we enjoyed in ministry over the previous 50 days.

Sacred Music Week  Though we weren’t directly involved in this annual music conference hosted by our college, we did enjoy hosting several of the guest lecturers and musicians.  At the end of the week we were treated to an incredible concert put on by nearly 200 musicians.  I doubt that this side of heaven it can get any better than this.

Bible Study at Antonio and Lucia's

Bible Study at Antonio and Lucia’s

Bible Study  On Wednesday nights we have been visiting a family in a mountain village 30 minutes from our home in Crato.  The purpose of these visits has been to disciple Antonio and Lucia, who were saved last year.  Their two daughters, a son-in-law, and grandchildren have also attended the Bible studies.  Just last week Rose, the oldest daughter, declared her faith in Jesus Christ for salvation.

Parqhe Grangeiro Youth

Parqhe Grangeiro Youth

Parque Grangeiro Youth   Our church plant in the Parque Grangeiro was begun as a ministry among the neighborhood children, and we continue focusing a great deal of attention to the children’s work.  However, children do grow up.  As they grow, the transition from childhood into the adult world is critical.  With very little, if any, spiritual encouragement from family and friends, we have seen too many of these adolescents slip away into the world.  This was our concern when we had ten of these young people, between the ages of 12 and 15, join us for an overnight campout at our home.  We combined Bible studies, testimonies from older youth, and other fun activities, all focused on encouraging them to stay close to God.  Each of them was presented with a daily devotional book for adolescents.

Hope English Encounter

English Hope Encounter

English Hope Encounter   Americans have something that many Brazilians want — English; and we also have something all Brazilians need, but may not realize it — the Gospel.  This is why we combined English and Gospel for a super fun three days of English Hope Encounter.  Using the Aventura Brasil staff, we hosted 70 English students with activities to develop their English skills, served American food, and had six workshops from “The Story of Hope”, where the gospel story was clearly presented.  Every participant received his/her own book, dontated by Joshua Huang.  We had a great time, and the gospel seeds were planted in some previously unreached hearts.

Joshua Preaching

Ministry in churches  The Aventura Brasil team ministered in eight different churches at various stages of development.  The young people shared testimonies and special music, and made many friends.  And Joshua got to preach six times; in English, through an interrupter.

We thoroughly enjoyed having Joshua Huang and Danae Oliver, friends from Iowa,  join us for the summer, and later Destiny Gates from New York, who came in for the three weeks of Aventura Brasil.  Our prayer is that this summer made a permanent impression on their lives, giving them a clearer focus for ministry; hopefully in Northeast Brazil; but we’ll leave the final word with God to lead.

Dear Prayer Partners,

Greetings in the name of our Lord!  We are on our mid-year break from classes at the college and are involved with several other ministry opportunities.  Between Bible studies, construction projects, Mission business, retreats, and Aventura Brasil, our vacation period is overflowing with activities and blessings.

Jim’s missions class finished the semester well, with a greater understanding and appreciation for world missions.  And they all passed!  Now our prayer is that they continue to faithfully attend weekly missions prayer band and that they take the missions challenge to the churches in which they work.   At least two from this class already know God has called them to be missionaries, one within Brazil and another to a foreign field.

Julie’s cooking class learned how to prepare healthy meals on a budget with recipes taken from the cookbook which she has prepared.  The ladies also raised money by having a canteen on a day for prospective students, in order to purchase a flannelgraph Bible story set.  This teaching tool was presented to one of Julie’s recent students who will soon be serving in Bolivia.  A special thanks to the Bright Lights, a teen girls missions group from Mason City, IA, who cut out the 600 figures in this set.

Next week will begin the 2013 edition of Aventura Brasil, a program to expose American young people to exciting adventures on a foreign mission field.  We will have on-the-field studies in missions strategy, history, culture, and theology.  The participants are immersed in a foreign language through activities with Portuguese speakers.  We are planning an “English Hope Encounter” with Brazilians who are interested in learning English.  During this three day event we’ll go through the evangelistic book, The Story of Hope.  We will also have a retreat with Brazilian English teachers and a vacation Bible school.  Pray for God to impact the three participants, the Brazilians with which we have contact, and the host missionaries.

Joshua Huang, a recent graduate from Faith Baptist Bible College, has already been experiencing our mission field for three weeks.  His daily insights on what God is teaching him are very interesting, and can be read on his blog, http://www.instrument4christ.comyr.com/blog/?p=1352.  Danae Oliver, also a student from FBBC, is back with us for a second time in Brazil.  Danae and Joshua have been very busy at our college’s annual Sacred Music retreat.  Danae’s thoughts can be read at http://www.ruminationsfromaredhead.blogspot.com.br.

This week we’re planning a short overnight campout with ten adolescents from the Parque Grangeiro church.  Most of these kids come from non-christian families and, at this age, are being exposed to many of the world’s temptations.  We hope to give them some spiritual tools to help them stand firm for God through this decisive  time in their lives.    Thank you for your love, interest, and prayers for us and the mission field in NE Brazil.
